Ruskin VR at Pop-Up Study UK event in Kuala Lumpur

20 February 2025

The Ruskin is showcasing new VR and AR experiences at the British Council Malaysia’s Pop-Up Study UK event in the Sunway Pyramid, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The VR experiences include:

  • a virtual gallery with a selection of Ruskin’s works on display, with audio providing context to the gallery space and text labels accompanying each of the works,
  • an interactive sketchbook, in which users are immersed into a virtual sketchbook where they can interact with different elements of Ruskin’s works (e.g. shells, trees, and clouds) through multiple pages of the book,
  • and the virtual cyanometer (a tool to measure the shade of blue) where different skies (Lancaster University, Brantwood, and Sunway University) are provided for the user to measure the shade of blue by rotating the cyanometer.

The AR experiences include:

  • a digital cyanometer camera, which users can point at a blue object and rotate the cyanometer on the screen to measure the shade of blue,
  • and AR postcards, each with an image of a work by Ruskin on the front, and a QR code on the back. Scanning the QR code opens an AR scanner and when pointed at the image of the work on the front, it displays a new and related image. Subjects of the postcards include botany, wildlife, and glaciology.
