The Ruskin Whitehouse Collection contains thousands of works relating to John Ruskin and his circle. Many works are from the 19th century and contain outdated views, offensive language and inappropriate content which was prevalent during that period. In particular, selected letters and manuscripts in The Collection contain racist, sexist and derogatory language.
The Collection is representative of the time period in which the works were created and the content of these works has been retained as a historical record, for research and to help understand the past.
We are working on improving our gallery texts to help put these works into context and to move towards a Collection which is accessible and inclusive for all.
